Hello Fresh (HF) is a weekly subscription service that delivers fresh ingredients and recipes to your door step. Each box comes step-by-step recipe cards and pre-measured ingredients for three recipes to cook for the week.
For a family of 2 prices start at $59 for a vegetarian box and $69 for a classic (non-vegetarian) box.
This review is based on a classic box for 2 people. Because I don’t eat pork or red meat, I was tempted to get the vegetarian box but I wasn’t that wowed by any of the past recipes so I opted for the Classic box.
How does the concept work?
Each week HelloFresh gives 5 recipe choices to choose from where you are required to choose 3. If you don’t choose you are sent three of the chefs choices.
The recipes tested
The 3 recipes we tried were:
- Baked Penne with Chicken Sausage and Kale
- Seared Mahi Mahi with mediterranean Bean Salad and
- Asparagus and Ricotta Flatbread with Arugala
All 3 were easy to make. The Baked Penne was the one we enjoyed most. My kids do not usually eat anything with visible vegetables in it but, surprisingly, they took this this dish. Even though this recipe was for 2 people, the yield was enough to feed and satisfy 4 people.
With the seared Mahi Mahi, the fish was great but I wasn’t too keen on the salad (the onion was a little overpowering). I didn’t really feel full after the meal. It felt more like a starter than an actual main course. The kids were not fans.
I enjoyed the Asparagus and Ricotta Flatbread. It was very filling and just right for 2 people. From the image, it didn’t look too appealing but I enjoyed it a lot. It was basically a high end pizza butthe kids didn’t enjoy it.
I must admit, it was very exciting trying the new recipes. I got to try things that I haven’t tried before and probably would never buy had it not been for this opportunity. i.e. arugula, kale, mahi mahi, asparagus
I liked that there is an option to pause service for the week or as long as you want, so if you are off for vacation, don’t like the recipes or simply want a break then you can log in and block the service days you don’t want.
Once you cook the recipes, do take a snapshot of them and enter them into the HelloFresh weekly contest using #HelloFreshPics. This also allows you to share and compare with others that have cooked the same meal – a great community element that I also love about HF.
I don’t really have a bad thing to say about our HF experience but if you are about to try the service, do stock up on some olive oil. All the recipes called for at least 1 tablespoon of it and it wasn’t included.
This service is more for the adventurous cooks and new cooks looking to try something different.
I would love to try the service again but will have to pause for a while until I get my finances back up.
